Top Tips for an Effective Promotional Strategy

Promoting yourself as an independent artist is a dynamic process that hinges on understanding your audience and using the right tools to reach them effectively. In February, we surveyed close to 5,000 artists on Redbubble, and 60% of responses revealed that social media plays a crucial role in promoting products and driving sales.

We searched for examples of how artists on Redbubble promote their work to help give you some inspiration. And while there isn’t a universal formula for success, knowing where your audience resides online and how they interact is key to crafting a winning strategy.

Choosing A Suitable Platform

  • Instagram: As a visually-driven platform, Instagram is the go-to space for artists. It thrives on engagement and authenticity, making it ideal for sharing high-quality images, Reels, and Stories. Video content, such as behind-the-scenes clips or tutorials, allows customers to connect with you on a deeper level. Authenticity is increasingly valued by audiences, so embrace your creative process openly.
  • Facebook : This platform remains relevant, especially for reaching older demographics and fostering community engagement. Beyond personal pages, artists can utilize groups and events to expand their reach. Facebook’s advertising tools can also help target specific audiences based on interests or behaviors.

  • Pinterest : Often overlooked, Pinterest functions as a powerful visual search engine. By optimizing pins with keywords and eye-catching visuals, artists can tap into its immense traffic potential. It’s particularly effective for driving users to your shop or website.
  • TikTok : Ideal for connecting with younger audiences who love trends and quirky content. Artists like Snazzy Seagull have successfully embraced TikTok’s chaotic charm to showcase their work creatively. Short videos highlighting your process or unique style can resonate well here.
  • Emerging Platforms: BlueSky & Cara : These newer platforms are gaining traction among artists looking to replace traditional spaces like Behance or DeviantArt. They cater to shopping-oriented customers and may offer fresh opportunities for exposure.

Content Strategies That Work

  • Work-in-Progress (WIP) Posts : Customers love seeing the journey behind your creations. Share sketches, time-lapse videos of your process, or snapshots of your studio to give them insight into your artistic world. See examples from Paolo Domeniconi and cellsdividing below.
  • Hooks & Promotions : Draw in your audience with compelling hooks—whether it’s storytelling about your art or offering discounts during sales events like Black Friday. Lower prices and limited-time offers often encourage buyers to act quickly. Jess.a.creates creates promotional content in her own style when her shop is on sale!
  • Diverse Content Types : Mix up your posts with finished pieces, behind-the-scenes glimpses, tutorials, and interactive polls or Q&A sessions. Tailoring content to each platform’s strengths will maximize engagement.
  • SEO Considerations : Optimizing your content with relevant keywords can significantly boost visibility across platforms like Pinterest and Google. Remember, SEO relies on relevancy—tagging your content with irrelevant keywords can negatively impact your reach. See our own guide on tagging for content relevance.

Ultimate Promotion Toolbox

  • Time-Saving Tools : Whether you’re a full-time artist or pursuing art as a secondary income stream, time is valuable. Tools like Meta Business Suite, Planoly, Hootsuite, or Later help plan and schedule posts across multiple platforms in advance.
  • Free Design Alternatives : If you don’t have Photoshop, Illustrator, or Procreate, free alternatives can help you create eye-catching promotional imagery.
  • Redbubble Promotional Templates : Redbubble has heard the community loud and clear—more promotional templates will be provided based on seasonal promotions or events like product launches. If you’re a Premium or Pro artist, make sure you’re subscribed to artist newsletters to stay informed of additional promotional tools.
  • Embrace Self-Promotion : Lastly, get used to bragging! Shower in the limelight!
