Jess dreams, Jess refines, and Jess.a.creates
If you love art that’s cute, spooky, weird, and a little chaotic—in the best way possible—then you’ve probably come across the work of Jess Adams, aka Jess.a.creates. A graphic designer and illustrator, Jess is dedicated to bringing humor and happiness into the world, one delightfully quirky design at a time. Whether it’s pastel ghosties, mischievous creatures, or playful whimsy, her art is made to spark smiles and laughter.
Jess has been part of the Redbubble community since 2017, growing alongside the platform and is a Pro tier artist (our top seller program) and an ambassador—truly a double whammy. Since 2020, she’s been consistently among the top-selling artists on Redbubble, making her a go-to creator for fans of the wonderfully weird.
We sat down with Jess to chat about her artistic journey, what inspires her, and how she balances the cute with the chaotic. Let’s dive in!
What are three fun facts about you that customers might not know?
- I’m a full-time graphic designer and love all things creative, but I only really started focusing on illustration during lockdown here in Melbourne—suddenly, I had way too much time on my hands!
- I have a rescue American Staffy named Mace, who is my absolute baby.
- I love reading and have a massive comic collection, mostly horror and sci-fi.
Where do you usually find inspiration for your art?
Everywhere!
What sort of art tools are your go-to?
My iPad and Procreate are my go-to tools! I love being able to create in my downtime, especially since I spend all day at a desk. Drawing is my way to relax, unwind, and just have fun!
How do you see yourself as an artist today, looking back on the challenges you’ve overcome?
When I started out, I overthought everything—I worried too much about what others would think and obsessed over every little detail. It completely took the fun out of creating. But over time, I learned to let go and make art for myself. If it didn’t make me smile, laugh, or feel excited, then what was the point? Now, I fully embrace my weird and playful style, and I wouldn’t have it any other way!
What do you do when you’re out of ideas?
Sometimes, you just need to step away. I never try to force creativity—it’s exhausting and rarely works. But I’ve found that surrounding myself with art, inspiration, and things I love always helps me push through an artist’s block.
What’s your approach to building a creative community?
Building a community on social media can be tough, but consistency and authenticity are key. I’ve found that when I create work I genuinely love, it naturally attracts people who connect with it too!
Jess’s journey is a reminder that art should be fun and freeing. Her advice? Have fun and enjoy it! Creating and sharing art should be a joy—it’s not supposed to feel like work. And simply creating for the love of it, is what makes Jess’s art so special.
