Make Fan Art

Artist Spotlight | Making Steven Universe Fan Art with Gamer-Threads

Fan Artist Gamer-Threads, also known as Kimmy-Arts, recently partnered with Redbubble to celebrate the release of Steven Universe The Movie. She created some amazing designs which you can see below and in her Redbubble shop, and asked her social followers to participate in a design challenge to win prizes.

Kimmy is a self-taught artist and illustrator who loves drawing, board games, and role-playing. She’s also a lover of all things geeky.

How long have you been creating Steven Universe fan art? What first inspired you? Since I first watched Steven Universe, I’ve always enjoyed drawing the characters in my downtime. I was initially drawn to the show because of its diverse and unique characters designs. Each character is so individual in both looks and personality, it was really refreshing to see and really inspiring as an artist!

What are the particular elements or themes from the show you enjoy drawing the most? The gems of course! Each gems design is so unique so it’s always fun to draw them :D

Which piece of Steven Universe fan art are you most proud of?
I just finished designing a piece of fan art of the 3 diamonds, I’d say that’s the piece I’m most proud of. I think I was able to capture each of their different personalities in the piece.

Connie

Who is your favorite character?
Oooh that’s a tough question! It’s tough to pick just one but I think I’m torn between
Pearl and Connie. I love Pearl’s complexity as a character, she’s very flawed but she has
grown so much throughout the series to become a much better person (er I mean gem haha). I can’t help but feel sad for her too, she’s gone through so much loss and heartbreak she deserves nothing but happiness now!
I also have a huge soft spot for Connie, I mean who doesn’t love her? She’s a total badass! Despite just being a human surrounded by gems she can still hold her own. I love her for that! She doesn’t just wait to be saved, she worked hard to become a formidable fighter herself.

Do you have any tips for artists creating fan art for the first time?
Start simple, just doodle whichever character speaks to you the most. I find creating
fan art is always an easier process when you draw characters you are genuinely passionate about! Maybe draw the character you chose with objects or specific colours, etc.that you relate to them to give it a theme.

If you could have any fan art dream come true – what would it be?
I guess a dream would be to draw fan art of one of my fav series and for it to be noticed by one of the artists involved (and then get hired to work on the show). A girl can dream right hahah?

How has your style and aesthetic changed over the years?
Back in the day, I lived on the art website deviantART, I mostly just posted manga styled art back then. Over the years my art went in a new direction and right now I’m obsessed with drawing cute/sparkly/retro stuff. My art is inconsistent and forever changing so who knows what it’ll be like in a few years time.

Do you imagine a finished artwork before you begin or do you work on developing characters or narrative first?
Yes! Which can be a nightmare, there’s nothing worse than seeing an amazing vision of a picture in your head and then you have no idea how to pull it off. I think it’s better to start with a narrative first.

What has been the most challenging experience you’ve had during your artist journey?
I currently juggle a full-time office job (gotta pay the bills, sadly) and working freelance,
so I’d say my most challenging experience as an artist is just making sure to meet deadlines. I basically work on my art non-stop in my free-time so it can be pretty exhausting.

The dream is to one day work on my art full-time!
