Spookyhex at a glance

What would you like us to call you?
Just call me Hex.

What was the inspiration behind your name “Spookyhex”?
My characters are spooky and creepy that’s why I decided to name my profile as Spookyhex.

Where do you call home?
I live in Cebu, it’s a small but beautiful island located in the Philippines also known as the Queen city of the south.

What are your favorite creative tools of choice?
Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator +  Wacom tablet.

What is your day job?
I am a full-time freelance Illustrator. I was applying for a job before as a children’s book illustrator but I got rejected.

If I could go back in time I will tell myself to put my focus on drawing rather than wasting time doing something else.”

A few fun facts about the artist.
Hex filled us in on a little secret, he gets all of his energy from drinking coffee. He describes himself as, “weird and sometimes funny”. A pet peeve of his is individuals with the” more talk, less art” attitude. And if he could gain one artistic skill overnight it would be to have the ability to draw realistic portraits.

Of all your works on Redbubble, which is your favorite? Why?
It’s hard to choose which one is my favorite, however, I will choose the Killer Alien because, for me, it’s so funny.

Where does the inspiration for your art come from?
When I was young  I always watched cartoon shows and listened to punk music (which had cool album covers). I kept drawing and eventually found my own style.

What’s the one thing you’re most proud of in your artwork?
Having my own style of drawing is definitely something I am proud of. And I’ve been working hard on it.

If you could go back in time, what advice would you give to your younger self?
If I could go back in time I will tell myself to put my focus on drawing rather than wasting time doing something else.

Have you always lived in the Philippines? Has the culture and surroundings there influenced your art?
Yes, I have been living here since birth. Yes, it influenced me a lot as Cebu has a lot of talented artists. I was really amazed of their artworks that’s why I decided to practice drawing. I studied animation for a while but animating is quite difficult, so I decided to focus on illustration and character designing.

What artwork are you excited to work on next?
I am currently doing a Halloween flyer and a t-shirt design.I hope I can finish this project by this week so that I can start drawing some Halloween monsters too. I’m super excited about it.
