Daily Inspiration: Jim Jarmusch on the Mainstream

"The things in the margins are more moving to me. Throughout history there has always been a mainstream culture, and a marginal culture, and the most innovative things are in the margins. Not always, but most often."

We’ve featured the wise words of the great Jim Jarmusch on this blog before, and I’m sure this won’t be the last time we do so either. Jarmusch sat down with IndieWire to talk about his new vampire film “Only Lovers Left Alive” and was asked about competing with the glut of mainstream vampire movies that have invaded theaters over the last few years and a specific scene in the film, which led to this observation about his own status as an outsider.

It’s okay to be on the outer edges of what’s “cool” and “popular” because, as Jarmusch says, that’s where the interesting work is happening. Don’t try to jump into the mainstream, let the mainstream come to you.
