Daily Inspiration: Chris Bangle on Critical Designers
"Designers think everything done by someone else is awful, and that they could do it better themselves, which explains why I designed my own living room carpet, I suppose."
Chris Bangle has garnered tons of attention as an American automobile designer everyone loves to hate. Designer Mark Newson once described Bangle’s work on re-designing BMWs as having been done “with a machete.” No other automobile designer has attracted such criticism, or attention ever. Bangle is a perfectionist and is credited for making modern cars look the way they look — making a rather unsexy sedan look inspiring and new. In the quote above Bangle has identified a trait amongst creative beings that often goes unnoticed, that often we think we can do something better, design it, photograph it, or draw it better than those before us. It’s a double-edged creative sword, sometimes propelling us to try and do everything, and sometimes it can backfire quite spectacularly.
