New York: Did you buy an original Banksy for $60?
So, you know that guy Banksy? He’s that street artist who refuses to show himself in public and is currently doing a monthlong “residency” in New York City. I’ve previously written about some of his NYC exploits on this blog, but this one is the topper. So far.
As you see in the above video, Banksy set up a stand in New York’s Central Park and sold original, signed pieces of “Spray Art” for just $60 a pop.
Yep. $60.
But the thing is, no one realized they were originals.
Some of Banksy’s most popular works including his “masked guy throwing flowers” and “jackhammering rat” were on sale at the stand. But since New York City is filthy with similar stands, no one had any idea that they were the real deal.
Eventually, a few pieces actually did sell. Two to a woman who haggled for a 50% discount, two to a woman from New Zealand, and four to a guy who just “needed something for his walls.” Making the grand total for the day: $420.
According to Arrestedmotion.com, Banksy originals have sold for over $200,000 at auction.
So hopefully these folks realize what they have.
But if not, at least they got hugs and kisses too, right?
But don’t go rushing over to to Central Park with the hopes of nabbing one of these valuable pieces now as Banksy said on his website: “This was a one off. The stall will not be there again today.”
PS, that old dude is totally Banksy.
